Organic Feedings

Organic programs and soil biology

We can put together an organic fertilizing and pest control program for you. Organic feedings are more expensive and do not work as quickly as chemically treated products, but the Department of Agriculture recommends one or two organic feedings a year to put natural organisms back into your lawn. Please remember all feedings should be watered in.

Our soil enhancement, Bio•Spectrum, is a complex of microbes, amending ingredients and enzymes. It helps beneficial microbes multiply in the soil, breaks down thatch into usable nutrients, and is 100% non-GMO and non-synthetic. It is approved for use on certified organic crops.

Fungicidal Treatment

Fungus in your lawn?

Most fungi do not cause long-term damage, and fungus usually comes from wet conditions. It can be taken care of if the problem persists, and many times fertilizing alone makes it go away. We have the products on hand to fix the problem.

  • Mushrooms: they are the fruiting bodies of fungi. Removing them does not kill the underlying growth, but it keeps them away from kids and pets.
  • Red thread: pinkish-red spots that appear in late May and June when temperatures and humidity rise. Fertilizing usually helps, and we have products for stubborn cases.

Tree & Shrub Care

Four treatments through the season

Most people assume trees and shrubs need little attention after planting. Proper fertilizing, watering and pruning matter. Call a good professional in your town to prune, and call Higgins Landscaping to spray and fertilize. We are fully licensed and insured.

Nuisance Pest Control

Enjoy your yard again

Warm weather brings ants, fleas, ticks, spiders and more into your lawn and around your home. We come to your home and apply our specially formulated treatment around the perimeter, then spread a granule insecticide on your lawn. Both treatments reduce pests so you can enjoy the yard all summer and beyond.

We guarantee your satisfaction.

EEE is one of the most severe mosquito-transmitted diseases in America, with about 33% mortality and significant brain damage in most survivors. West Nile virus is spread when a mosquito bites an infected bird and then a person. Mosquitoes carry the most virus in early fall, and risk falls as the weather turns colder.

Aerating

Let your lawn breathe

Even with the best care, lawns thin out from thatch, foot and pet traffic, and heat or drought. Aeration removes small cores of soil and thatch so air, moisture and nutrients reach the root zone. Turf experts such as golf course superintendents rate aerating and over seeding as the best treatment for thatch and compacted soil.

When to aerate: September through November in fall, or March through May in spring. Most lawns benefit from annual aeration.

  • Stronger grass roots
  • Better fertilizer uptake and use
  • Less water runoff and puddling
  • Better water intake by the plant
  • Improved resiliency and cushioning

Thatching

Brown underneath? It may be thatch.

Thatch is a layer of living and dead grass stems and roots that builds between the soil and the green lawn. Too much of it blocks water and nutrients, absorbs pesticides, crowds out new grass, and hides insects and disease.

For best results, dethatch about every one to two years, in March or April or in early fall, and fertilize afterward.

Why thatch matters

  • Prevents water and nutrients from reaching the roots
  • Absorbs pesticides and fungicides
  • Harbors diseases such as leaf spot, summer patch and dollar spot
  • Lets grass roots grow into the thatch rather than the soil
  • Regular dethatching lets new grass shoots grow thick and lush

Slice & Over Seeding

Thicken a thin or weak lawn

Slice seeding repairs a damaged lawn or improves a thin one. The seeder cuts furrows into the soil and plants the seed in them, so it touches the soil and germinates, rather than being spread on top where much of it would not take. It is also the best way to renew a heavily thatched lawn and sow improved grass varieties.

Fall is the best time to aerate and over seed. The temperature has dropped, crabgrass and annuals are dying off, and new seed has a better chance to grow.

Seasonal timing

  • Spring: plant grass seed only once winter is over
  • Summer: water to avoid drought stress, without overwatering
  • Fall: plant new grass, trees and shrubs, and aerate and over seed

Tips & Resources

Seasonal lawn care tips

Simple steps to make your lawn a beautiful one.

Spring

Plant when temperatures and rainfall are right, and never mulch too high around trees, which can rot the trunk. Plant shrubs and trees high and they won't die; plant them low and they won't grow.

Summer

Figure out what your lawn, trees and shrubs need, and water to avoid drought stress without overwatering. Summer is when crabgrass and nutsedge thrive, and when insects make homes in your lawn and eat your trees.

Fall

An excellent time to plant grass, trees and shrubs. Water new plantings well if rain is scarce, plant spring bulbs such as tulips, hyacinths and daffodils, and aerate and over seed.

Mowing height

Cut at 3 inches in April and May, when grass grows fast. In June, July and August, raise the cut to 3½ inches to shade the roots from the sun.

Watering

Water less in spring and more in summer, watering deeper so roots grow down toward moisture and survive drought. Judge watering by the season's temperatures and rainfall.

Lawn diseases

Fungi cause most lawn diseases. Overall lawn health, weather and season all play a part. Proper watering and fertilizing boost your lawn's resistance.
